      • All registered Troop 676 Scouts and registered Adults who pass the gear inspection at the April 12 meeting, and confirm (see “ROSTER” below) by April 6 may participate in this outing.
      • This outing is strongly recommended as a PREREQUISITE if you plan on going on either the Glacier NP or Beartooth treks, and is REQUIRED if you plan on going on either the Glacier NP or Beartooth treks AND you missed the March outing.
      • This will be another “training-intensive” outing, with even more independence given to Scouts. We’ll be evaluating Scouts very carefully on this trek for their ability to implement their new backpacking skills, and assess whether or not they will be ready to participate in the Glacier National Park trek in June. We are also looking for increased physical fitness and stamina, and this will be a tougher outing than the March outing. See the physical fitness section of the Troop Backpacking Handbook (click “Resources” above to find it) for more info.
    • ROSTER
      • Scouts (Andrew, Tyler, Jordan, Alex, Chase, Michael, Quinn, Nate, Jackson, Walker); Adults (Mr. Hall, Mr. Jordan, Mr. Smith, Mr. Hickey, Mr. Roy).

      • Backcountry water treatment for groups (gravity filtration)
      • Backcountry hygiene
      • Personal (solo) cooking methods
      • Trekking and Camping Efficiency

      • Poison Plants and Dangerous Animals of Bear Trap Canyon
      • Wilderness Act of 1964
    • HAZARDS:
      • Poison ivy (long sleeve hiking shirt and pants, cap with brim, and thin gloves for hiking recommended)
      • Ticks (100% DEET repellent recommended – apply to neck, wrists, and ankles, tuck pant legs into socks, tuck shirt into pants, check your buddy for ticks frequently, consider treating outer clothing with Sawyer Permithrin)
      • Rattlesnakes (we’ll probably be too early in the season but if weather is warm (60s or higher), watch your feet!)
      • Snow (bring emotional fortitude)
    • GEAR & FOOD:
      • Download the gear list below, and note the following changes/additions to it:
      • Add your personal cook kit that you received at the April 5 meeting. Be sure to FINISH your cook kit construction BEFORE you arrive, or it will not work properly! Note that the storage caddy doubles as your bowl (bottom of the caddy) and mug (top of the caddy) and you can also use the cook pot included in the cook kit for a mug, so you just throw a spoon into your new cook kit and leave your old mess kit at home!
      • Consider bringing a lightweight fishing rod with a few flies or lures. Leave waders, fishing vests, and tackle boxes at home please.
      • Everyone should bring their “Troop 676 Trekking Card” (keep this in a secure pocket at all times, and don’t lose it!), which you received at the April 5 meeting.
      • Patrols will plan, shop for, and package the following meals: Saturday breakfast, Saturday dinner, Sunday breakfast. These meals will be distributed at the April 12 meeting.
      • Scouts are responsible for Friday dinner (no-cook “sack dinner”, but include hot drink mix), Saturday lunch/snacks/drinks/desserts, and Sunday lunch/snacks/drink mixes.
      • Each adult should be self-sufficient with respect to water treatment kit, shelter, food, bear bag hanging, and cooking gear. Adults can share this gear with each other, but not with Scouts. Ryan will provide group water treatment kits for each patrol, including each adult patrol.
    • MORE INFO:
      • Every Scout, parent, and participating adult should Download and READ (yes, the whole thing!) the Troop Backpacking Handbook (link below). If you ask Mr. Jordan a question that has an answer in the handbook, your likely response will be “It’s in the Handbook…” In other words, read the handbook thoroughly, THEN ask your questions! 🙂
